Nature conservation area: the Sürth Plain

Part of the Sürth Plain, an area that borders directly on Godorf Harbour, is officially registered as a nature conservation area. One can find many protected species here such as the European penduline tit, the skylark, the grasshopper warbler, the nightingale and the red-backed shrike. Environmentalists criticise that these animals would lose important havens as a result of the development of the Godorf Harbour and thus the endangerment of these species would be negatively affected.

If Godorf Harbour is developed and the conservation area is destroyed, the HGK should ensure there is a replacement area that would serve as a new home for the protected species of the Sürth Plain. Environmentalists argue that the areas suggested as an alternative are unsuitable. These include different biotope types and, furthermore, it would take at least 15 years to prepare a suitable area for the relocation of the species.

The HGK received planning permission and started the preparatory measures; however, the construction was halted and the discussion about the construction continues. Here you can find out more about what the nature conservation area in the Sürth Plain looks like.
